Empathy and Leadership: Past, Present, Future is a resource guide with an accompanying project that explores how historical empathy may be used to support teaching and learning about the First World War.
Historical empathy may be defined as a process of attempting to understand the thoughts, world views, feelings, experiences, decisions, and actions of people in the past, within their specific historical contexts. It places particular emphasis on understanding everyday people, including those who have been marginalized, not just well-known historical figures.
This guide encourages educators to apply the elements of historical empathy to their teaching to help make connections to the past whereby history becomes more meaningful to students in the present. The accompanying project aims to engage participants in translating empathy into action—youth engage in advocacy and change-making on an issue impacting their community.
Eligible youth or groups are encouraged to submit their community project idea to Vimy Inspires Tomorrow for a chance to earn a project grant to help bring their idea to life.
