Allward: Bringing Stone to Life - Lesson Plan

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial was designed by Canadian sculptor, Walter S. Allward, and remains an important Canadian work of art. The artist used life-size models to create the sculptures that are positioned on the Vimy Memorial. Allward: Bringing Stone to Life aims to explore his work and its place in Canadian history and art through these maquettes.

This lesson plan brings this project into classrooms. It encourages students to explore the question, “what should be memorialized?”. The culminating task for students is to design a powerful memorial/ monument based on the Vimy Memorial’s themes.
